British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
