Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
