The Cadillac F1 team Utilizes NASA Playbook to Assemble Team from Nothing for Australian Race Debut.

Approximately twelve months previously at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Cadillac were finally granted the official approval as Formula One’s newest participant for 2026. Constructing the team from nothing has required a intense work rate that the team boss, Graeme Lowdon, has equated to the NASA lunar mission. As the sport converges on Vegas this race weekend, the team know time is getting tight.

The Tight Timeline to Australia

At the season finale of the season to be staged in the America, with around 100 days to go before they hit the circuit for the maiden outing in Australia at the 2026 season opener, the Cadillac F1 project have advanced rapidly but, in what must seem like a sisyphean endeavor, they are aware there will never be adequate time.

The technical director, Nick Chester, came aboard the embryonic team in March 2023 soon after it was formed, when the squad were without even an confirmed place. He has been at its heart ever since and enjoys a amused expression when thinking about the experience.

“You might get a short period reflecting at what you’ve done and think: ‘Wow, isn’t this fantastic what the team has created in a short three-year period,’” he says. “Then the next minute you think: ‘Well, we still have a significant amount to do.’”

An Unprecedented Task

Chester had success at the Renault team in Alonso's championship-winning years of 2005/2006 and was in charge of technical development at the recently formed Mercedes-Benz Formula E team, but no previous experience has truly matched the challenge of introducing the quintessentially American Cadillac marque, a factory team sponsored by the parent company, GM, into Formula One.

“Building an grand prix team from scratch, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” Chester remarks. “It's unparalleled. In an well-set team you rarely get the chance to transform organizational mindset.”

With each day that elapses focus are increasingly concentrated on the approaching critical moment in Melbourne and expectations are being set realistically.

“You have to assume that any incoming team joining the grid is likely to start at the back but just making it to the starting line will be an feat in itself,” Lowdon stated earlier this year and while the CTO shared this view he believed the organization had a reputation to build as well.
“The initial objective we want to show is that we deserve to be there,” he emphasizes. “In order that we show up and we operate well. We want to show that this is a professional operation doing the proper actions on the circuit. When we have demonstrated that our credentials are solid, then we will focus on progression from there on.”

Pilot Selection and Recruitment Drive

In August they contracted Sergio Pérez and Valtteri as their racers for the 2026 season, a tandem distinguished for their vast knowledge in competing at the leading positions in two championship-winning squads, Red Bull and Mercedes, and Bottas echoed the attitude of fighting spirit.

“Naturally, we have a realistic outlook,” he commented. “There’s going to be a huge amount of work to do, and we expect probably a difficult start, because this is Formula One. But our goal isn't to remain at the rear. I am confident with this setup, with this group, these people, there’s no reason why we won't be able to get relatively quickly to a competitive level and taste victory.”

To achieve that goal recruitment has been in full swing, with personnel now up to in excess of 400 and intended to attain the target of 600 rapidly. Alongside their present headquarters at the UK base, the organization are in the phase of finishing an HQ at the Fishers location in Indianapolis and there is the GM plant in Charlotte, where they are building the center to build the 2029 engine, planned for the 2029 season – for now they will run Ferrari power units – and the Toyota wind tunnel in Germany. It is a complex organisation, different from the trend in Formula One for more centralization, and has led to the fresh organizational mindset to which Nick Chester referred to.

Apollo Blueprint

“It’s highly modelled on the Apollo program,” remarked Graeme Lowdon ahead of the Silverstone race in July. “We’re realistic, we understand how difficult it is. The timelines, they’re super, super, super short. Well, we aren't launching a lunar mission, but the pressure is comparable.”

So they have embraced, instead of the traditional management structure, a flat management structure similar to that of the space agency's, where there were a range of project teams all tackling distinct elements of the mission in a variety of locations.

“When you must follow a procedure where someone has a problem and they escalate it to their team leader, that supervisor communicates with a supervisor in another department, it goes back down the chain, it’s super slow,” explains the CTO. “We give authority to staff to take charge. Eliminating management approval for all decisions is far more efficient and quicker.”

Upcoming Challenges

The effectiveness of this agile strategy will be proven in the heat of competition in 2026 and there is no little amount at stake for Formula One, too. The Cadillac team have taken on as their test driver the young Californian Colton Herta
